For sale, George Dettmer square piano c.1824. £6,000
This piano is by George Dettmer & Son and dates to c.1824. It has a six octave compass and close wound base strings giving it a dark, rich tone in the base. As can be seen it has an unusual system of original and adjustable bracing bars made from bronze. This is the only known extant example with this experimental system which, prior to this piano surfacing, was only known from a Dettmer patent for a similar barring system designed to enable the adjustment of pitch.

This lovely, instrument underwent extensive restoration by Robert and Andy Durand of the Music Room Workshop in 2010 which involved the replacement of the hitch rail cap and a full dismantle and rebuild of the soundboard, a full restring and some other little tweaks that were needed to return it to full and reliable playing condition. It sits happily at A420 although could probably be raised to 430 if desired. The tone is rich and it is most suitable for the performance of early romantic music. It has been used in concert. As you can see, although it’s uniqueness makes it worthy of any museum collection, it is far from just being a museum piece and would please any musician requiring a piano for regular use.
